Islanders' Mat Barzal, Semyon Varlamov likely done for the season

It's not a great vibe on Long Island, as the New York Islanders sold off some assets before the trade deadline, and now they've received some bad news on the Mat Barzal front. According to GM Lou Lamoriello, Barzal is likely done for the season.

The 27-year-old forward sustained a lower-body injury blocking a shot on Feb.1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Barzal's since had a minor procedure completed on Feb.6, and so far, the rehab appears to be going at a pace that's going to make him unavailable for the rest of the season.

"We hope, but I couldn't answer that," general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "We'll see where the rehab will take us. We're not going to push it. We're not going to rush it. We're not going to chance anything. He will be 100 percent completely healthy if he is to return."

Barzal's been injury prone this season, and there was some thought he could get moved to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson prior to the trade deadline. Barzal's missed 21 games earlier in the year due to an upper-body injury.

In 30 appearances this season, Barzal has scored six goals and registered 20 points. In other Islanders news, it appears Semyon Varlamov is also done for the season due to a lower-body injury.
