Islanders Sign Top College Free Agent

It's that time of year, as the NCAA hockey season starts to wrap up, for top undrafted prospects to find themselves snapped up by NHL teams. Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello has been down this road before and has done it again, signing top college free agent Gleb Veremyev out of Colorado College to a two-year entry-level contract.

The Boston Bruins were also thought to be interested in Veremyev again, as they had him in at their Developmental Camp last summer, but neglected to sign him then.

A 21-year-old center out of nearby New Jersey, Veremyev is big and physical, and projected to be a bottom-six center. He would bring elite faceoff skills to the Island, and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty if necessary. As noted by Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, his offense won't "jump off the page... but scouts see the potential with his NHL-sized frame (6-foot-4) and attention to detail." He's a 200-foot player.

Veremyev will join  Max Dorrington as a new Islanders recruit out of college. Per Russ Macias of NYI Hockey New, Dorrington, 23, signed an ATO (amateur tryout agreement) with the Bridgeport Islanders on Friday morning. He registered 12 goals and 22 points in 38 games with Sacred Heart this season after four years at St. Lawrence University.
