Linus Karlsson’s $775K Deal: Canucks Lock In Rising Star

The Vancouver Canucks have made a savvy move, signing versatile winger/center Linus Karlsson to a one-year, one-way extension at the league-minimum $775,000. This deal ensures the 25-year-old Swede stays in the fold, avoiding Group VI unrestricted free agency this summer.

But here’s the kicker: Karlsson is quietly turning heads and might just be gearing up for a breakout role in the NHL.

Drafted in the third round by the San Jose Sharks in 2018, his rights were traded to Vancouver in 2019 for Jonathan Dahlén. After cutting his teeth in Sweden’s SHL with Skellefteå AIK, where he showcased his skill and poise, Karlsson made the leap to North America in 2022.

This season, Karlsson has been nothing short of electric, racking up over a point per game. After a solid 60-point campaign last year, he’s already tallied 19 goals and 13 assists in just 28 games this season.

Injuries and NHL call-ups have limited his AHL time, but he’s made the most of his opportunities with the big club. On January 29, he scored his first NHL goal against the Nashville Predators—a milestone moment that hints at more to come.

While his NHL stat line (one point in 13 games) might not jump off the page, the one-way nature of his new contract speaks volumes. It suggests the Canucks see Karlsson as a potential regular in their lineup next season, especially as he enters his final waiver-exempt year.

If he doesn’t crack 80 NHL games by 2025-26, he could hit Group VI free agency again. But if he does, Vancouver retains control for another year before he hits standard UFA status in 2027.

With only 27 of 50 contract slots filled for next season, the Canucks are keeping their options open, and Karlsson’s extension adds an intriguing layer to their plans. Could this be the year he solidifies his spot in the NHL?

One thing’s for sure: Karlsson’s story is one to watch as he looks to make his mark in Vancouver.
