Maple Leafs Rumors: Analyst Determines Who 'Needs' To Start Game 1 Of Playoffs
While both Woll and Anthony Stolarz have shown flashes of brilliance this season, Valiquette, speaking on the Real Kyper and Bourne Show, pointed to Stolarz’s recent struggles, including a four-game losing streak and a 3.19 GAA with a .876 save percentage over his last five outings.
“I was worried about Stolarz after the Colorado game,” Valiquette said, noting technical flaws in his movement and positioning that have led to costly goals.
Meanwhile, Woll has been more consistent in critical moments, winning five of his last six games and proving reliable when Toronto's defense falters.

Stolarz has still had an impressive first season with the Leafs, posting a 2.39 GAA and a .918 save percentage overall while ranking second in the NHL in Goals Saved Above Expected per 60 Minutes.
However, since returning from injury, his inconsistency has raised concerns. Valiquette pointed out specific issues in Stolarz’s play, such as getting too wide in his stance and failing to beat cross-ice passes, making him vulnerable against top shooters.
Woll, despite having similar recent stats, has been steadier in high-pressure situations, a key factor in a playoff setting.

Coach Craig Berube has rotated his goalies throughout the season but has stated he will name a clear No. 1 for the postseason.
While Woll appears to be the frontrunner, Stolarz could still reclaim the starting job if he finds the form that made him dominant earlier in the season. Woll recently helped his case even more, stopping 38 of 39 shots in a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
With the playoffs approaching, every start will be crucial in determining who ultimately gets the nod.
