Pius Suter Trade Incoming? Buzz is Picking Up on Canucks UFA

He's probably been the Vancouver Canucks' best center since the trade of JT Miller. But Pius Suter is a pending unrestricted free agent with no extension in sight. Is he in his final hours as a Canuck?

On Tuesday, insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a hint that something could be up when he said on The Fan Hockey Show, "Just watch Vancouver's UFA's. I've heard there's been a little more talk around them."

A Canucks insider quickly pointed out that extension talks with third-line pivot Suter have been failing.

Rich Dhaliwal said that Suter and the Canucks are "far apart" in contract talks, while adding that things were "quiet on the Boeser and Soucy fronts". Brock Boeser and Carson Soucy are the other Vancouver UFAs that have had their names in trade talks.

Then Tuesday night we got a report from Adam Kierszenblat of The Hockey News that Vancouver was working on a trade of Suter with the Dallas Stars.

But that was followed closely by a report from TSN's Farhan Lalji, who seemed to refute that claim:

Who to believe?

Suter, 28, is wrapping up a two-year, $1.6 million AAV pact, and has proven himself, in five NHL seasons, to be an extremely reliable middle-six scorer. He's never recorded less than 14 goals in a season, and this year already has a career-high with 16, on pace for 22 goals, and a career-high in points as well, projecting to 39.

His name hasn't appeared on anyone's trade boards all season, as Boeser, Elias Pettersson and the now-departed Miller have used up all the oxygen on the Vancouver rumor mill.

From the Stars' perspective, they are said to be looking for another depth add. But they're obviously pretty stacked up front as it is, especially after the recent addition of Mikael Granlund.
