Rangers Sign 6’2”, 205 Lbs Defenseman To Two-Year Extension
The New York Rangers have secured defenseman Urho Vaakanainen with a two-year contract extension, as reported by Arthur Staple of The Athletic. The deal is valued at $3.1 million, carrying a1.55 million annual cap hit.
The 26-year-old blueliner, who was a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights, is now set to continue his journey with the Blueshirts.

Since joining the Rangers from Anaheim on December 6, 2024, Vaakanainen has made an immediate impact. In 30 games, he’s tallied nine points (2 goals, 7 assists) and a solid +2 rating.
Standing at 6’2” and 205 pounds, Vaakanainen brings both size and skill to the blue line.
The Joensuu, Finland native has skated in 171 career NHL games across stints with the Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, and Boston Bruins, amassing 34 points (3 goals, 31 assists). During the 2023-24 season with Anaheim, he set career highs in assists (13) and points (14), showcasing his growing potential.
Vaakanainen’s international resume is equally impressive. He recently represented Finland at February’s 4 Nations Face-Off and has a decorated history in international play, including three consecutive World Junior Championship appearances (2017-19) and medals at the 2016 World U-18 Championship (gold) and 2017 World U-18 Championship (silver).
Originally drafted 18th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2017 NHL Draft, Vaakanainen has steadily developed into a reliable defenseman.
