Report: Devils Turning Their Attention to Brayden Schenn As Deadline Approaches
The New Jersey Devils are in desperate need of a solid center after losing superstar Jack Hughes for the remainder of the season to injury. And after losing out on Brock Nelson on the trade market, beat writer James Nichols says the Devils have turned their attention today to St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn.
Schenn is more of the kind of player that aligns with general manager Tom Fitzgerald‘s wish list. The Devils GM prefers players who he can acquire, and will remain with the team for more than just a quarter of a season and a playoff run.
If the Devils can acquire Schenn, the idea is he could be the ideal 3C behind Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier when New Jersey returns to full health in the future, while filling an elevated role for the remainder of this season.
Schenn, with a Stanley Cup on his resume, has three years to run on his deal with a $6.5 million cap hit.
The 33-year-old has 12 goals and 38 points in 61 games, a bit down from his usual 20-goal output.
The big question for the Blues is whether they will sell off today, despite being right in the playoff mix. The loss of Colton Parayko for the rest of the regular season, however, is weighing heavy on their decisions today.
The Devils have interest in other players as well, but center remains their No. 1 priority.
