Report: Ryan Suter Wants To Keep Playing—On One Condition

Ryan Suter has made it clear that he wants to keep playing beyond this season—if he gets his wife’s blessing. 

The 40-year-old defenseman, now in his 20th NHL season, is enjoying his time with the St. Louis Blues and hopes to stay with the team. “I’d love to stay in St. Louis,” Suter said on The Late Shift, the Blues’ YouTube show. “My wife’s on board, and I want to help this team get back to the playoffs.” 

While he remains committed to the game, the Blues have not shown strong interest in extending him, especially with younger defensemen like Tyler Tucker, Philip Broberg, and Cam Fowler stepping up.

Suter has embraced a reduced role this season, playing on the third pairing and logging one goal and 12 points in 61 games while averaging 20:19 of ice time. 

Though his speed and offensive production have declined, he remains a steady presence, blocking shots and maintaining a 91.2% on-ice save percentage at even strength. 

With Torey Krug’s injury status uncertain and Nick Leddy’s future in question, there could still be a path for him to return if the Blues want veteran depth. However, if they decide to move on, Suter may need to find a new team or accept a tryout in training camp.

If the Blues don’t re-sign him, Suter believes he can still contribute elsewhere, even in a limited role. He has been mentioned in trade rumors, along with Brayden Schenn and Radek Faksa, but for now, his focus is on finishing the season strong. 

“I still love playing the game,” he said. “If the opportunity is there and my wife is on board, I’d love to keep going.”
