Sabres Sign Jacob Bryson To One-Year Contract Extension
After starting the season as a healthy scratch for the first 11 games, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jacob Bryson didn’t stay on the sidelines for long. The 27-year-old quickly won over head coach Lindy Ruff, earning a semi-regular role and proving his value as a reliable depth player.
Bryson’s consistent performance and versatility have clearly impressed the Sabres’ brass. On Thursday, the team rewarded him with a one-year, $900,000 contract extension, ensuring he won’t hit unrestricted free agency this offseason.

Over his five-year NHL career, Bryson has shown a knack for stepping back into the lineup after sitting out and making an immediate impact—a skill that hasn’t gone unnoticed. This move underscores the trust the organization has in the Providence College alum, who has become a steady presence on the blue line.
Standing at 5-foot-9 and 177 pounds, Bryson isn’t the biggest defenseman on the ice, but he’s carved out a niche with his ability to move the puck effectively out of his zone—a trait coaches highly value.
While his stat line this season (zero goals and seven points in 42 games, averaging 14:22 of ice time) might not jump off the page, his contributions go beyond the numbers.
Over his 248-game NHL career, Bryson has tallied four goals and 43 points, showcasing his reliability and poise.
Drafted by the Sabres in the fourth round (99th overall) in 2017, Bryson’s journey hasn’t always been straightforward. Last year, the team opted not to extend him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent but ultimately brought him back on a one-year deal.
Now, with this new extension, Bryson has another opportunity to solidify his role and continue proving why he belongs in the NHL.
