Top 4 Favorites: Updated Stanley Cup Odds After Deadline Dust Settles
Now that all the dust has settled from the trade deadline and the new pieces are in place for their new teams around the league, it's time for a look at how everyone stacks up in the odds for the ultimate goal—the Stanley Cup.
Looking at three of the most notable oddsmakers, the Top 4 in the chase for the Cup are all remarkably consistent — and so are the Top 2, in one order or another.
Per DraftKings, as of Wednesday March 12, the top 4 favorites in the betting odds to win the Cup are as follows:
- Dallas Stars (+600)
- Florida Panthers (+650)
- Edmonton Oilers (+800)
- Colorado Avalanche (+1000)
FanDuel has the same top four, but a different winner:
- Florida Panthers (+500)
- Dallas Stars (+550)
- Edmonton Oilers (+800)
- Colorado Avalanche (+950)
Bet365 simply can't decide between Dallas and Florida, so they went with this:
- Florida Panthers (+550)
- Dallas Stars (+550)
- Edmonton Oilers (+700)
- Colorado Avalanche (+800)
No surprise that the two teams that made the biggest single jaw-dropping splashes at the deadline have the most improved odds, after the Panthers shocked the world by trading for Brad Marchand at the 11th hour (and also adding Seth Jones on the blueline a few days earlier). They're right in line to go back-to-back and defend their championship — IF Matthew Tkachuk, Marchand and the suspended Aaron Ekblad all return in tip-top shape for the playoffs.
The Stars made their explosive move on March 7th by trading for playoff beast Mikko Rantanen, improving their odds considerably to the +500 to +600 range.
The Oilers made a significant add themselves at the deadline, trading for Jake Walman to shore up their blueline, keeping their odds within striking distance of the top two favorites. To maintain their place, however, last year's Finalists will need to do much better than the 3-6-0 run they've been on since coming out of the 4 Nations break.
The Avalanche bettered their odds by having a nice trade deadline, with a series of additions, including much-sought-after center Brock Nelson, along with Charlie Coyle, Jimmy Vesey, Ryan Lindgren (and Erik Johnson).
Finishing just behind that foursome in all the oddsmakers' books (with odds of +1000 or slightly higher) were the likes of the Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Canes, naturally, dropped quite a bit after trading away Rantanen. As for the Jets, they get no love, despite being tied for top spot in the entire NHL, going into Wednesday's play.
