Toronto Maple Leafs To Sign Prospect Defenseman John Prokop

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs are signing defenseman John Prokop to an entry-level contract.

Prokop, 23, was one of the top undrafted college free agents available, and now he has found his new home with the Maple Leafs. He will now provide the Original Six club with another interesting defenseman for their prospect pool.

Prokop just completed his third season with Union College. In 36 games with the school, the Wausau, Wisconsin native had eight goals, 27 points, and a plus-12 rating. This was after the 6-foot-3 left-shot defenseman had eight goals and 35 points in 36 games with Union this past season.

Prokop demonstrated good promise during his collegiate career with Union. He was not only solid defensively, but he also produced strong offense from the point. In 107 games with the school over three seasons, he had 20 goals, 65 assists, and 85 points. Now, he will look to translate some of this over to the professional level from here.

Overall, there is no harm in the Maple Leafs bringing in a young defenseman like Prokop in their system. It will be interesting to see how much of an impact he can make with Toronto.
