TRADE: Penguins Acquire Luke Schenn & Tommy Novak for Michael Bunting

Is this the first Schenn to drop? The Pittsburgh Penguins have sent forward Michael Bunting to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak.

We'd been hearing plenty of rumors about teams trying to unite the Schenn brothers via separate trades, but it would be quite the surprise if it was the Penguins that would pull it off. They're a team that's supposedly looking to get younger.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had been rumored as one of the teams anxious to pair up the Schenn brothers, so the irony wouldn't be lost on any Leafs followers if former Toronto GM Kyle Dubas managed to do it in Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, TSN's Darren Dreger is reporting that Pittsburgh might not be Schenn's final destination, and he could potentially be flipped, even though they like the player very much (Dubas acquired him for the Leafs at the trade deadline in 2023).

Schenn, 35, is a well-travelled veteran D-man, now joining his 9th team. He's racked up 228 hits in 61 games for the Preds this season, while playing an average of 15:35 per night.

Novak is having a decent season in Nashville's bottom six, with 13 goals in 52 games, on pace to what would be a career-high 19.

The Predators also get a 2026 4th-round pick in addition to Bunting. The 29-year-old heads to Nashville, bringing 14 goals and 29 points with him, in 58 games. He is out for the foreseeable future, however, after appendix surgery.
