TRADE: Red Wings Acquire Petr Mrazek & Craig Smith From Blackhawks

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired Petr Mrazek and Craig Smith from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Joe Veleno.

Mrazek had been in the rumor mill after the Blackhawks acquired goaltender Spencer Knight from the Florida Panthers. Now, the veteran goaltender is heading back to the Red Wings, the club where he started his NHL career.

Mrazek is signed until the end of the 2025-26 season and carries a $4.25 million cap hit. In 33 games this season, he has a 10-19-2 record, a .890 save percentage, and a 3.46 goals-against average.

Smith, 35, will give the Red Wings another veteran forward for their bottom six. In 40 games this season, the 2009 fourth-round pick has nine goals and 16 points. Overall, he can provide solid depth offensive production and should be a nice rental for the Red Wings.

As for Veleno, the Blackhawks have acquired a former first-round pick who could benefit from a change of scenery. In 56 games this season, he has five goals, 10 points, and 93 hits. He will also be more than a rental for the Blackhawks, as the 25-year-old has a $2.275 million cap hit until the end of next season.
