Maatta, 30, was acquired by Utah from the Detroit Red Wings back in October. Since then, Maatta has become a key part of Utah's blueline. The left-shot blueliner has spent time on Utah's second pairing and is also used on their penalty kill. Now, he will continue to be an important part of Utah's defensive group after earning this nice extension.
Maatta has appeared in 51 games this season with Utah, where he has two goals, 12 assists, 14 points, 101 blocks, and a plus-7 rating. This was after he had zero points and an even plus/minus rating in seven games with the Red Wings this season before the trade. Overall, the change of scenery has done Maatta wonders, and it helped play a role in him getting this multi-year extension from Utah.
Overall, this has the potential to be a good move for Utah. They kept around a solid part of their blueline and also got Maatta to stay put at a reasonable cap hit.
In 742 career NHL games split between the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Red Wings, and Utah, Maatta has 42 goals, 191 points, 815 hits, and a plus-82 rating. It will be fascinating to see how he builds on these career stats after earning this new extension from Utah from here.
