Video: Marchand Fights Off Tears; He ‘Offered a Compromise’ To Stay in Boston, They Refused
Brad Marchand is a Florida Panther. That just sounds weird. But what we heard all through the season and right down to the trade deadline is that he did not want to leave the Boston Bruins—the team he's spent his entire 16-year career with.
How much did the pending UFA want to stay in Beantown? When the two sides got to a standstill in negotiations on an extension in the week leading up to the deadline, according to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Marchand offered a last-minute 'compromise' to try to bridge the gap:
I heard that he reached out and asked for an in-person meeting... I have it on good authority and from a lot of places that he offered a compromise. He said, 'look I'll compromise a bit, you guys compromise a bit and let's get this done'. I really think he thought that was going to work, but it didn't. The Bruins had decided they had gone as far as they were gonna go.
Meanwhile, a very emotional Marchand fought off tears as he addressed the media Monday morning in Florida.
Brad Marchand to media in Florida: “It was very disappointing things didn't get done. I love the organization and wanted to stay there but I know business is business.” #TimeToHunt #NHLBruins
