The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year, $72 million contract extension. Chychrun’s contract will carry an average annual value of $9 million.#ALLCAPS | @Shift4
Chychrun, 26, was a pending unrestricted free agent and could have tested the market on July 1. However, with this extension, the 26-year-old blueliner will be staying with the Capitals for the remainder of his prime.
The Capitals acquired Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators this past offseason in exchange for defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick. This is a move that the Capitals must hold zero regrets over, as Chychrun has been a fantastic addition to their roster since.
In 65 games this season with the Capitals, Chychrun has 18 goals, 25 assists, and a career-high 43 points. He also has an impressive plus-24 rating on the campaign.
Given how well Chychrun has played for the Capitals, it is easy to understand why they worked hard to keep him around in DC. Now, he will continue to be an incredibly important part of their blueline for a very long time with this move.
In 532 career NHL games split over nine seasons split between the Arizona Coyotes, Senators, and Capitals, Chychrun has 94 goals, 165 assists, 259 points, 616 hits, and 814 blocks.
