3 Offseason Targets For Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames have officially been eliminated from playoff contention and a big reason for that is the lack of scoring. This was a really odd Calgary team, but they fought every night. There are some changes that need to be made in order to push this team forward because they definitely don't want to take a step backwards at this time.
Anton Forsberg
Dan Vladar is going to be headed to free agency, so the Flames are going to need to bring in a backup goalie to play behind Dustin Wolf. Vladar put up much worse numbers than Wolf this season, and Wolf was the main reason the team was in the position they were in. While being one of the lowest scoring teams, they were also a team that restricted goals against. Wolf already proved to be the starter, and Anton Forsberg showed what kind of big help he could be in Ottawa this season. He contributed to the most shutouts from a team this season and had a .901 SV%. That's 11 points better than Vladar and adding a veteran to play behind Wolf is a good idea.
Brock Nelson
Brock Nelson isn't getting any younger, but neither are a few of the Flames. The team needs another top-6 center since Mikael Backlund is 36 years old and Morgan Frost either isn't there yet or will never be. Nelson is a solid second line center and has been for many years. He also brings the thing the Flames need the most, scoring. The 33-year-old has 26 goals this season, but scored 34 or more goals in each of the past three seasons. He won't get a long contract at his age, but if the Flames are going for it, they might as well do the most they can right now.
Pius Suter
Pius Suter has had a great breakout season at age 28. The unlikely situation in Vancouver has allowed him to step up in a big way and he has scored 24 goals while logging key minutes. He is at a better age than Nelson or Backlund, but is more unproven as well. Calgary would be able to save money and likely won't have to commit to as long of a contract. The risk will be if he is able to repeat his performance from this season. If the Flames bring him in for a role as the second line center, I think he will be able to handle it.
