Breaking: NY Rangers Make Huge Move with GM Chris Drury

The New York Rangers have made a huge—and some would say, unexpected—move with general manager Chris Drury, announcing today that they have handed him a multi-year extension.

Drury was the subject of much consternation by many around the Blueshirts— inside the locker room, in the media, and by fans—after a season of chaos that began with the trading of captain Jacob Trouba, and winding up with the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

But the Rangers are obviously more than happy to have Drury keep the keys for well into the future.

“I am honored to sign this contract extension and continue in this position with the team I grew up supporting,” Drury said in a team statement. “As I said when I began in this role nearly four years ago, there isn’t a more special organization in hockey and I look forward to continuing our work this offseason to help us reach our goals for next season and in the coming years.”

In the 2023-24 season, the Rangers won a franchise-record 55 games and registered an all-time team-best 114 points, earning the Presidents’ Trophy as the team with the best regular season record in the NHL.

But this season was riddled with controversy. The trading of Trouba can't be underestimated as to what it did to the locker room, and the upheaval seemed to continue throughout the year, as the team dropped a full 29 points in the standings, to finish 5th in the Metropolitan Division, and six points out of a Wild Card spot in the East.

Drury will try to get this team back to being a solid contender for the 2025-26 season, and beyond.
