Breaking: Shocking News for Winnipeg Jets on Nikolaj Ehlers

It was a freak collision with an official, but it could cost the Winnipeg Jets dearly. Head coach Scott Arniel has announced that Nikolaj Ehlers is out "week to week" after aggravating a foot injury in the incident.

The play occured during the second period of the Jets game with the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, when Ehlers was backing up waiting for a breakout pass, and his skate got caught under linesman James Tobias’ skate along the boards.

Ehlers was not able to put any weight on his right leg as teammates Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton helped him off the ice. Not that it'll make Jets fans feel any better (in fact, maybe worse), but Tobias remained in the game.

The 29-year-old winger had missed two games earlier this month with a foot injury, and Arniel thinks this was an aggravation of that problem.

Ehlers, a pending unrestricted free agent, is one of the Jets' top scorers, with 24 goals and 63 points in 69 games this season, his 8th 20+ goal season.

It's a brutal blow for Winnipeg, who go into the playoffs this coming weekend with the best record in the NHL, but now without their third-leading point man.

This could be taken as an ominous sign of a repeat from the 2023 playoffs, when Ehlers was only able to play in one game in the first round, as the Jets were eliminated by the Vegas Golden Knights.
