BREAKING VIDEO: Ovechkin Makes History With #895

And there it is, the long-awaited moment has arrived. #895 for Alex Ovechkin, passing Wayne Gretzky and becoming the NHL's All-Time Goal Scoring King.

Here's the call from Capitals announcer Joe Beninati for Monumental Sports Network:

And here's how it sounded from Ovi himself, as he was mic'd up for the moment:

The goal came on the power play in the second period against the New York Islanders on Long Island, as Ovechkin blasted a shot from his office. Goalie Ilya Sorokin will go down in history as the victim between the pipes.

Ovechkin made a flat-out headlong dive to center ice in celebration, where he was mobbed by his teammates.

Wayne Gretzky made the official handover of the torch in a ceremony on the ice:

"Alex, I said I'd be the first guy to shake your hand when you broke the record..." said Gretzky as he fulfilled that promise on the red carpet at center ice.

Here's the call from Caps' radio voice John Walton:

A cool stat comes to us from Chris Johnston, who notes that Ovi is the 10th man to hold the all-time goals mark in the long history of the NHL. The last four are the legendary Rocket Richard, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, and now Ovechkin.

The 39-year-old Ovechkin now has 42 goals on the season, and charged to the record by scoring in five straight games.

The Gr8 Eight passes the Great One.
