The goal came on the power play in the second period against the New York Islanders on Long Island, as Ovechkin blasted a shot from his office. Goalie Ilya Sorokin will go down in history as the victim between the pipes.
Ovechkin made a flat-out headlong dive to center ice in celebration, where he was mobbed by his teammates.
Wayne Gretzky made the official handover of the torch in a ceremony on the ice:

A cool stat comes to us from Chris Johnston, who notes that Ovi is the 10th man to hold the all-time goals mark in the long history of the NHL. The last four are the legendary Rocket Richard, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky, and now Ovechkin.
Just 10 players have held the NHL's all-time goals record since the league was formed in 1917. The crown has been passed among legends over the last 70-plus years.
