Calgary Flames' Rasmus Andersson Makes Stunning Revelation

Rasmus Andersson revealed during the Calgary Flames’ end-of-season media availability that he played the final 12 games of the 2024–25 campaign with a broken fibula, an injury he sustained while blocking a shot against the Seattle Kraken on March 25.

Despite the fracture near his ankle, the 28-year-old defenseman stayed in the lineup as the Flames made a late push for a playoff spot, saying, “With the stage we were in, pushing, I just don’t think that was an option.”

He was excused from most practices and relied on painkillers and treatments to stay on the ice, often struggling through the early stages of each game before finding a rhythm.

Andersson admitted his performance during that stretch wasn’t up to his standards, but he felt it was important to set an example for the younger players about playing through adversity.

“You’re playing through stuff that’s not great,” he said. “In my world, I don’t like sitting out. If I can get my skate on, I’ll most likely play.”

His efforts were recognized by head coach Ryan Huska, who praised the alternate captain’s character and dedication to his teammates. Andersson finally sat out the season finale after the Flames were eliminated, finishing the year with 11 goals and 20 assists over 81 games.

With his ankle now healed, Andersson is set to represent Sweden at the upcoming IIHF World Championship.

He enters the final year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract and is eligible to sign an extension in July. Though he has expressed a strong desire to remain in Calgary, Andersson said no decisions have been made yet, stating, “I’ve loved every second here, and whatever happens, happens.”
