Canucks Rumors: Elias Pettersson's Agent Hints At Trade This Offseason

Elias Pettersson’s future with the Vancouver Canucks is once again in question after his agent, J.P. Barry, acknowledged that a trade this offseason wouldn’t be surprising.

Speaking on the Donnie and Dhali Show, Barry addressed the swirling rumors directly: “Not really surprised, it’s a business.” With the Canucks having missed the playoffs by six points and Pettersson enduring his worst NHL season to date, the timing of the speculation is no coincidence.

He managed just 15 goals and 45 points in 64 games, a steep decline from his 102-point peak in 2022-23.

Complicating the Canucks’ position is the structure of Pettersson’s contract. While he currently has no trade protection, a full no-move clause will kick in once the 2025-26 league year begins.

That gives Vancouver a narrow window to act if they’re serious about exploring a blockbuster deal involving their highest-paid player, who carries an $11.6 million annual cap hit through 2032.

According to Canucks president Jim Rutherford, “He’s gonna have to buy into being a complete player,” noting the organization’s desire for a more consistent and committed version of Pettersson going forward.

Amid talk of a trade, Pettersson is said to be focused on a bounce-back offseason. “Elias is planning a big offseason,” Barry added. “He is super determined to have a great season next year.”
