Flyers Could Be Targeting RFAs To Send Offer Sheets

The rebuild of the Philadelphia Flyers isn't going to finish immediately. There are multiple things that still have to be addressed. The building blocks are there with Matvei Michkov and some other young talent, but a lot of them need time to develop in the NHL or below and more impactful players need to be brought in.

With that being said, the Flyers have a lot of cap space and could be looking to target a team that has RFAs that can be offer sheeted this summer. Elliotte Friedman made note of the Flyers having seven draft picks in the first two rounds in 2025 and then all of their picks for the 2026 draft at this time.

If a team signs a player to an offer sheet and the other team doesn't match, draft picks are used as compensation to that team. The Flyers have more than enough to make a big offer to a RFA without a contract. Giving back two first-round picks in future years will have a much later impact than acquiring a player close to entering their prime who is already a sure thing in the NHL.

The Flyers have some options, whether that be at forward or defense. Frank Seravalli brought up JJ Peterka from the Buffalo Sabres who is having a great season, but some other options include Matthew Knies, Marco Rossi, Will Cuylle, Evan Bouchard, Noah Dobson, K'Andre Miller, and Alexander Romanov.

I believe some will be signed before a team can even have a chance at sending them an offer sheet, while others won't even receive one or we won't know that they did. Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg both signing offer sheets last summer may have opened the door again for teams to be aggressive in this approach to acquiring players. The Flyers should most definitely try this offseason.
