Insider Reveals 'Next Shoe To Drop' for NY Rangers
It was exactly a year ago that the New York Rangers were about to celebrate winning the Presidents Trophy as the top team in the NHL's regular season. This year? Not so much. From 114 points to finish the 2023-24 campaign, the Rangers will be watching the playoffs from the sidelines this time around, sitting with 79 points with four games to play.
After a season of drama and trades, rumors have been circulating around the team as to the futures of several players and personnel in the organization, and on Thursday, insider Pierre LeBrun weighed in with his latest intel, telling TSN that the wait for the 'next shoe to drop' could definitely focus on head coach Peter Laviolette.
In talking to other people around the league, the low-hanging fruit, the expectations of a lot of people I've talked to, is that Peter Laviolette could get fired... When you look at the body language and the performance of the team over the last month, again, when I talk to people around the league, that's the easist conclusion.
LeBrun made a point of suggesting that the Rangers' "malaise" this season isn't all about coaching. The changes in the locker room have had an effect, going all the way back to the waiving of Barclay Goodrow last summer, and then the trading of captain Jacob Trouba early in the season.
So does that mean that GM Chris Drury, who precipitated those moves, is on thin ice as well?
"My sense is that he should be okay," says LeBrun. "There's a lot of loyalty there from owner Jim Dolan."
There's some feeling around Ranger observers, however, that this is all backwards.
Chris Drury being allowed to fire a 3rd coach and hire a 4th in his tenure while he keeps his job is absolutely bonkers. He’s a huge problem too. I don’t understand this at all. #NYR https://t.co/W5lhpfJoOz

Summing it up, the insider says there are "a lot of people around the league waiting to see what shoe will drop (next)."
