NHL Rumors: Rangers To Explore Mika Zibanejad Trade Options This Summer

Mika Zibanejad Trade Rumors Swirl After Underwhelming Season – Will He Stay or Go?

Mika Zibanejad finds himself at a pivotal moment with the New York Rangers following a lackluster season. The 32-year-old center, who managed just 62 points in 82 games, has drawn criticism from fans and management alike after failing to meet expectations.

In a report by New York Post insider Molly Walker, Zibanejad addressed his future ahead of the Rangers' final game, saying:

“I know what my contract says. Both parties agreed to it, and like I said, I think I’ve earned it. Until it’s time to adjust it, I have no plans of going anywhere. I’ve invested a lot of years here.”

His phrasing—“until it’s time to adjust it”—has fueled speculation that he might eventually consider waiving his full no-movement clause.

While Zibanejad maintains his commitment to New York, there are signs he could be open to a move if the right opportunity arises.

Would Zibanejad Actually Waive His No-Trade Protection?

Reports suggest the Rangers explored a blockbuster deal sending Zibanejad to Vancouver for J.T. Miller, but the veteran center declined to waive his clause, forcing New York to trade Filip Chytil instead.

Here’s the reality: Zibanejad’s refusal isn’t just about loyalty—it’s also about leverage. At 32, his production has dipped since his 91-point peak in 2022-23, and his $8.5 million AAV (running through 2029-30) makes him a difficult trade asset unless the Rangers eat salary.

Even if he does agree to a move, finding a contender willing to take on his contract—and the risk of an aging center—won’t be easy for GM Chris Drury.

Unless Zibanejad bounces back in a major way next season, expect these trade rumors to ramp up again as the 2025 deadline approaches.

The Rangers are in win-now mode, and if a better fit emerges, the conversation about moving him will heat up once more.
