NHL News: Capitals' Alex Ovechkin Ties Wayne Gretzky's All-Time NHL Scoring Record

Move over Wayne Gretzky, you have company!

With Gretzky in attendance, Washington Capitals' great Alex Ovechkin scored two goals, tying the Great One's iconic NHL record of 894 goals. Spencer Knight of the Chicago Blackhawks was between the pipes and is now the answer to an all-time trivia question.

Ovechkin was mobbed by his teammates after the goal, and the Caps faithful went wild, in what was an electric atmosphere in Washington:

"It's something special," Ovechkin mentioned postgame. "Doing it at home, in front of fans, family, friends, and obviously Wayne's here as well. It's a huge honor. It's a historical moment. It means a lot. I don't know what to say right now, so emotional. You never thought you could reach (this) milestone."

Ovechkin reached the scoring milestone in 1486 games, one less than Gretzky, which is a wild stat. "This is what the game's all about," Gretzky said after Ovechkin tied his record. "Alex has been great for the game, great for Washington, great for his own country. It's wonderful. I'm very proud of him."

"I (told head coach Spencer Carbery) I don't want empty net (for 895)," he said, per The Associated Press' Stephen Whyno.

Ovechkin looks to break the record Sunday on Long Island, against Ilya Sorokin and the pesky New York Islanders.
