NHL Offseason Mock Trade: Ducks move John Gibson to Hurricanes
With the NHL's regular season winding down, GM's of bottom-feeding teams in both conferences are going to start to shift their focus to the 2025 offseason. Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek has some big decisions to make this summer, which could include moving goaltender John Gibson, and given the crease on a full-time basis to Lukas Dostal.
Gibson's name has been in trade rumors for a couple of years now, but this past trade deadline, the noise had never been louder, and the Ducks were reportedly very close to moving their long-time goaltender. Expect the talks to continue this summer, and there's a team in the Eastern Conference that makes a ton of sense as a potential destination.
NHLTR Mock Trade: Ducks deal John Gibson to the Carolina Hurricanes for 2026 second-round pick and prospect Ryan Suzuki.
The Hurricanes are expected to let Frederik Andersen walk this summer, as he's dealt with a slew of injuries and hasn't consistently been available. Gibson, 31, would give the 'Canes a solid tandem partner for Pyotr Kochetkov. Gibson's under contract for two more years at $6.4 million and his 10-team no-trade clause likely does not include the Hurricanes on it, as they have great weather, a winning team, and a chance to win a Stanley Cup.
Moving Gibson's money off the books would give Verbeek a chance to bolster his offence this offseason, and reallocate some resources to their forward group, where they could desperately use another top-six forward.
Keep an eye on these two teams this summer. They talked a ton prior to the trade deadline and a move could materialize after this season.
