NHL Rumors: Anaheim Ducks Eyeing Blockbuster Move for Mitch Marner

As the NHL offseason approaches, Mitch Marner’s future is becoming a major storyline—and the Anaheim Ducks are reportedly gearing up for an aggressive push to land the star forward.

According to The Athletic’s Ducks insider Eric Stephens, Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek has already signaled a new direction for the franchise by parting ways with head coach Greg Cronin. Now, with a coaching search underway, Verbeek is expected to be just as bold in reshaping the roster—and that could mean pursuing Marner, one of the biggest names potentially available in 2025.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs can’t lock him down with an extension, Marner—a premier two-way playmaker—could hit free agency as the most sought-after talent on the market. The Ducks, with nearly $39 million in cap space, are one of the few teams with the financial flexibility to offer him a massive deal.

Anaheim’s young core—featuring rising stars like Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, and Cutter Gauthier—has immense potential. What they need now is a proven superstar to accelerate their rise into playoff contention. Marner’s elite offensive creativity, defensive reliability, and postseason experience could be the perfect fit for a team on the upswing.

With ample cap room, an attractive market, and a clear intent to compete, the Ducks are well-positioned to make a major splash.

The biggest hurdle? Convincing Marner—who will likely have multiple suitors—that Anaheim is the right place to chase championships.

The Verdict

This offseason could be a turning point for Verbeek and the Ducks. Landing Marner would supercharge their rebuild, instantly transforming them into a team to watch.

But if he prioritizes a ready-made contender, Anaheim may need to explore other high-profile trades to take the next step.
