Insider Provides Update On Rasmus Andersson’s Uncertain Calgary Future

The Calgary Flames’ 2024–25 season was far more competitive than expected, but their playoff hopes ended in heartbreak as they fell just one point short.

Now, GM Craig Conroy faces yet another pivotal offseason—one that could hinge on the future of star defenseman Rasmus Andersson, whose name continues to swirl in trade rumors. Despite fans’ optimism, uncertainty looms over the blueliner’s long-term status with the team.

Will the Flames Move Andersson This Summer?

According to Calgary Sun insider Daniel Austin, Andersson’s contract situation may be the biggest storyline in Calgary this offseason. The 28-year-old has just one year left on his current deal and becomes extension-eligible on July 1.

However, both sides have admitted there’s “uncertainty” about his future—a familiar scenario for Flames fans.

This echoes the situations involving Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, and Noah Hanifin, all of whom were traded after extension talks stalled. Andersson, a top-pairing, right-shot defenseman who eats up minutes and chips in offensively, would undoubtedly fetch a significant return if dealt.

If an extension isn’t reached early in the offseason, Conroy should seriously consider trade options.

Letting this drag into training camp would only create unnecessary distraction. Given the demand for high-end defensemen, Andersson could become one of the most sought-after trade targets—especially for contenders who strike out in free agency on players like Ivan Provorov, Aaron Ekblad, or Vladislav Gavrikov.

Moving Andersson now, while his value is at its peak, would not only bolster Calgary’s retool but also prevent the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.
