Nikolaj Ehlers Trade Talks Intensify: 3 Realistic Scenarios for Winnipeg

As the NHL season nears its end, the Winnipeg Jets find themselves at a crossroads this offseason—with Nikolaj Ehlers’ future at the center of the discussion.

The dynamic second-line winger is approaching unrestricted free agency on July 1st, leaving fans and analysts wondering: Will Ehlers explore the open market?

Now 29, Ehlers has been a consistent offensive threat for the Jets, recording multiple 60-point seasons. However, as Jets insider Jacob Stoller notes, the Danish forward has previously hinted at being open to a new chapter—and with his skill set, he’d undoubtedly attract plenty of interest if he hits free agency.

The Challenge of Replacing Ehlers

Finding a player of Ehlers’ caliber won’t be easy. Stoller’s assessment that Winnipeg isn’t a top free-agent destination complicates matters, meaning GM Kevin Cheveldayoff may need to part with a first-round pick to land a top-six forward via trade—a risky move in an unpredictable market.

Potential replacements could include established veterans like John Tavares, Matt Duchene, or Sam Bennett. Tavares, still productive, might seek a short-term, high-value deal. Duchene brings offensive upside, while Bennett offers scoring, physicality, and playoff experience.

However, any of these options would come at a steep price, potentially squeezing the Jets’ cap space.

The Case for Keeping Ehlers

At present, Winnipeg’s best move is to prioritize re-signing Ehlers. He’s a proven fit within the team’s system, and there’s no guarantee a replacement—whether through trade or free agency—will seamlessly fill his role. The Jets have never been a major player in free agency, making internal retention the smarter play.

The bottom line? The Jets are in a tough spot. Losing Ehlers without a capable successor could weaken their offense significantly.

As rumors swirl, management must tread carefully—weighing immediate needs against the franchise’s long-term vision.
