Red Wings Rumors: Detroit to Buy Out RHD Justin Holl
The Detroit Red Wings and defenceman Justin Holl could be headed for a divorce this upcoming offseason.
Holl, 33, has one season left on his contract at $3.4 million AAV. So far this season, Holl has recorded one goal and five points in 67 games. Last season with the Red Wings, the Tonka Bay, MN native registered five assists in just 38 games. He was a healthy scratch for long stretches throughout last year, and hasn't been consistently performing to expectations since signing a multi-year contract with the Red Wings back in the summer of 2023.
These are the kind of plays the Red Wings have dealt with from Holl of late:

Justin Holl and Vlad Tarasenko on this team right now are anchors. No one can tell me otherwise. The fact that neither Walman or Ghost aren’t on this team but Holl and Tarasenko are tells me all I need to know about why this team isn’t making the playoffs #LGRW pic.twitter.com/aaD9yzBeQp

It's been 4 years and I still can't believe Kyle Dubas gave away Jared McCann for nothing just so he could keep mediocre defenceman Justin Holl. https://t.co/5dVJTwcjbV

As far as cost, Holl's buyout would cost the Red Wings $1.13 million on the cap for next season and the 2026-27 season. It would save Detroit $2.2 million on their cap in 2025-26, and is likely the route GM Steve Yzerman is going to take.
