Red Wings Rumors: Huge Update On Alex Lyon's Future With Detroit

Alex Lyon’s time with the Detroit Red Wings appears to be nearing its end.

The 32-year-old goaltender, set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has slipped to third on the depth chart behind Petr Mrazek and Cam Talbot.

Lyon hadn’t played in over three weeks before injuries gave him a brief return to the crease, but his most recent outing—a 4-3 loss to Ottawa where he was pulled after allowing three goals on ten shots—may have been his final appearance in a Red Wings uniform.

Asked if the team’s defensive lapses or Lyon’s struggles were to blame, head coach Todd McLellan didn’t mince words: “Both.”

Lyon has made a habit of staying ready, regardless of circumstance. “My mentality is I’m here to help the team win,” he said after a recent win in Utah. “I love playing in the NHL and I want to stay here, but that’s been the reality of my life forever.”

With Sebastian Cossa waiting in the wings and the team committed to Mrazek and Talbot through next season, Lyon is expected to move on.

Still, he’s tried to make the most of his opportunity, calling the last two years in the NHL a blessing after spending eight seasons largely outside the league. “You have to play with a chip on your shoulder all the time,” he said. “And you have to play fearless.”
