Several NHL Teams Ready to Pounce on Denver Goalie Matt Davis After Frozen Four
After one of the top goaltenders in the NCAA, Callum Tung, was scooped up by the New York Rangers earlier this week, University of Denver star netminder Matt Davis is on a lot of NHL teams' radars.
For now, he's a little busy, getting set to man the crease for the Pioneers as they go for their third NCAA championship in four years. But once that's done, insider Elliotte Friedman noted on the Oilers Now podcast, Davis will be heavily in demand.
There are teams looking at him, and the more they win, the more eyes get on him and the more people start to look at him, so there will be competition. Some of these teams that lost out on Tung are going to go to (Davis) and say, 'Ok he's the next option, we're going to take a look at him.'
It would have been awfully hard not to notice Davis last year during the NCAAs. He made save after miraculous save in the 2024 Frozen Four, stopping 67 of 68 shots in Denver's run to its record 10th national championship. Overall in the tournament, he posted an insane .979 save percentage. If he's able to backstop the Pioneers to another title next week, his stock will go through the roof.
Davis, 23, has posted a 29-9-1 record this season with the Pioneers, with a .923 save percentage and 2.07 goals against average. In his four years at Denver, he's 63-16-4 with a .921 Sv%.
One team that we know was anxious to try to sign Tung was the Calgary Flames. Perhaps they will be one of those looking very hard at Davis.
Davis didn't have to go far to experience his first NHL Development Camp last July, attending the Colorado Avalanche's camp, right in his DU backyard.
