Sharks Rumors: Potential 2025 First Overall Pick Available For Trade

The San Jose Sharks may be cooking up something very interesting. According to Sheng Peng, the team is willing to consider trading the first overall pick in the 2025 draft if the Sharks were to win the draft lottery.

As a rebuilding team that would really benefit from drafting another player right at the top of the draft, there may be a couple of reasons for this. The first overall pick holds a ton of value, but some years more than another. For example, the 2026 first overall pick is going to hold more value as Gavin McKenna is projected to be a franchise center and better than anyone at the top of the 2025 draft.

The Sharks aren't expected to make the jump out of the bottom of the league next season, but if another rebuilding team with a top-5 pick this season were to offer an unprotected first round pick next season with extra on top, this would give the Sharks two opportunities to win the draft lottery for McKenna.

The top of the 2025 draft could go a number of different ways as the top talent is all similar in skill with Matthew Schaefer, Michael Misa, James Hagens, Porter Martone, and a few others. The four I mentioned are expected to go in the first four picks.

It doesn't seem like the Sharks will be sending out trade offers to move the first overall pick if they win it, but rather wait for what teams come to them with. There will be time between the draft lottery and the draft for teams to really figure out what they want. A trade could involve a top player or more developed former top prospect. We will have to wait and see how it plays out, but with this report, it would be the most fun to watch the Sharks get the top pick and potentially make a trade.
