Stunning Update Delivered by Canucks On Quinn Hughes’s Future

It looks like we can add another layer of drama to the Vancouver Canucks off-season.

At his end-of-season press conference, Canucks president Jim Rutherford dropped a bombshell, admitting to the media that captain Quinn Hughes would like to play with his brothers in the NHL in the future, and that that's partly "out of our control."

The subject came up when Rutherford and general manager Patrik Allvin were asked about when they start thinking about an extension with Hughes.

“It may not boil down to money with him. He (Quinn Hughes) has said before he wants to play with his brothers," said Rutherford. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here."

Both Jack Hughes, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and Luke Hughes, 4th overall in 2021, play for the New Jersey Devils.

Quinn Hughes, the 7th overall pick by Vancouver in 2018, and the oldest of the three, has two years remaining on his six-year, $7.85 million AAV contract with the Canucks. He is, without doubt, the team's most valuable player.

So what does the future hold for (Quinn) Hughes & the Canucks? Rutherford summed it up thusly:

"There's many moving parts here. Agree 100%, this franchise cannot afford to lose a guy like Quinn Hughes and we will do everything we can to keep him here. But at the end of the day, it'll be his decision."

It's the last thing Canucks fans needed to hear, after a tumultuous season, and facing more chaos this summer, with the current uncertainty about the status of head coach Rick Tocchet, and questions about whether center Elias Pettersson can ever regain his star status.
