Top Free Agent NCAA Goalie Chooses Rangers Over Flames

We heard on Monday morning that the Calgary Flames were among the teams that had great interest in free agent NCAA goaltender Callum Tung, but in swooped the New York Rangers, and the 21-year-old undrafted UConn goalie has signed an entry-level deal to head to Broadway.

Tung had an excellent year in his lone season with the Huskies, posting a .933 save percentage (sixth-best in the NCAA), with a 2.01 goals-against average, while going 10-4-1. He led them to their first-ever NCAA Tournament.

On his 32 Thoughts podcast on Monday, Elliotte Friedman said of Tung that ”people were drooling about him... a bunch of NHL teams are chasing after him... “A super talented young goalie.”

Tung, the 6'3", 200-pound netminder, will now head to the Rangers AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack to begin his professional career, on an amateur tryout for the rest of this season. His three-year entry-level deal with New York kicks in next season.
